Aphelandra

Aphelandra (Aphelandra Squarrosa, Zebra Plant, Saffron Spike Plant) is an evergreen perennial known for its large, glossy, dark green leaves that feature bold, white or silver veins, creating a striking contrast. The leaves are typically 4 to 8 inches long, with an ovate shape and slightly pointed tips. The plant can grow to a height of 1 to 3 feet indoors, making it a manageable size for indoor environments. The plant’s most notable feature is its inflorescence. Aphelandra produces bright yellow, cone-shaped flower spikes that can be up to 4 inches long. These spikes are surrounded by bracts that are often mistaken for the flowers themselves. The actual flowers are small and tubular, emerging from between the bracts. Flowering usually occurs in the late summer or early fall, although with proper care, it can happen more frequently indoors. The dramatic foliage and occasional flowering make Aphelandra a beautiful ornamental plant, adding a tropical vibe to indoor spaces.
